Day 4 - Puerto Penasco to Tucson
Thursday, 27 December 2007
The day started bad... hangover. I'm not a big drinker, and even when I do drink alot, I don't mix it up. The tequila and beer really took it's toll and it's really difficult to get moving and think straight! At times like these I really hate myself for having done it! I know better than that!
Anyway, final preparations are underway to leave again, and the local town pimp, Juan Pablo knocks on my door at 7am with the tow rope. He even offers to have his friend tow me, however, I thankfully decline.
Knowing full well that :
1. Alan will be here later, and is suffering right now... just like me.
2. Alan is a biker... he undestands.
The idea of being tied to the back of car, who's driver I didn't know or trust was a bit of a worry for me. Anything could happen, the tow rope could get caught up in the front brake assembly and disk and if he's not very carefull he could end up dragging both me and the bike behind him before realising what to do... I don't know, so I don't do!
Alan arrived with Tahoe, and I'm still not ready. He's suffering too, and I suggest that we go get breakfast before we commence proceedings, although he declines on the basis that it probably wounldn't be a good idea right now.
The rope we have is pretty average, nylon rope which is really not strong enough to tow even a Motorcycle. So we double it up, decide that the crash bars would be the best place to tiedown the rope and start. After a shaky start, and 4th gear not doing the trick, plus a rope break, we finally get her going after 200m of towing in 3rd gear!
I actually got it all on video from the bike cam we designed and built in Los Angeles a couple of days before I left. After that, I get her nicely warmed up around town, fill up the tank to the brim which will take me all the way back to Tucson and finally have the nerve to swtich her off and rely on the kick starter only from here.
While packing up everything, and also straight after my much needed breakfast, I gave her a kick and let her idle for 2 mins... just to keep her breathing and the blood pumping 100%. I don't want to be fully packed and ready to go, only to struggle till I'm blue in the face kick starting this beast. I finally leave.
The ride to the border is uneventful and they just let me through on the Mexico side, but the US... obviously makes me get off, show my passport etc. I switched the bike off too, and struggle to get her going again at the post which leads to a alot of frustrated cars behind me... I think some of them may have felt sorry for me struggling like this in the midday sun!
I made one mistake, declaring my Cypro I bought from a pharmacy in Mexico... very causually to the guard who asked me if I'd purchased any medication. They made me walk all the way back to the Mexico side and throw it it out, as it's been banned to come into the US from Mexico becuase of abuse. Apparently it's not only used to treat Anthrax victims, but it's is also a muscle relaxant and abused by many people in the US!
The funny thing is that I would have had it prescribed, but due to time contstraints and the local emergency department at a hospital in Beverly Hills not being very helpful and only giving me some basics... I had to go without it and buy it over the counter in Mexico!
I took the Ajo Road from the boarder of Mexico, through to the 86 which leads through to Tucson. It was a fairly long drive, given the fact that I had a late start which was usual for me by now, and it was a bitter cold 5 degress c when I arrived into Tucson at night. The road was in excellent shape though, some curvy bits and excellent scenery all the way.
I got to Tucson and stopped at the 24hr IHOP, which was right next to the Motel I was crashing in for the night and literelly had 4 or 5 coffees to warm me up from the ride. I checked my email on my Nokia N73, and the starter was due in the morning.
What a day, back to civilisation! For 1 day.
