Day 2 - Mexicali to Puerto Penasco

Half the day today was taken up with repacking the bike in the morning, and re-entering Mexico through the 'Mexicali Dos' border and ensuring I have all the formalities sorted out for the bike's temporary importation into Mexico.
Being Christmas day, meant that the border post had queues and was generally short staffed. They made me wait almost 30 mins at Mexico immigration as the man that was supposed to give me my passport stamp and sign off the tourist card was sleeping!
US customs didn't want anything to do with my Carnet that I'm travelling under, and didn't even know what it was... They looked at it for 5 minutes and said 'Why don't you just go and we'll stamp it out when you fly it out of LA again? Not being in the mood for more issues, I accepted that and went back through the Mexian border.
I didn't feel like further complicating matters by telling them that it would be most unlikley that I´m going to drive up Central America again with the bike and export it out of the US. This time the Mexican border was a little more organised. Banjercitos (the Mexican Bank) located at the border processed the temporary importation of the bike, and also handled all the fees that were due.
It took me almost 1 hour to process my credit card at the bank, as their POS machine was insufficiently up to date to use the new security chip on my Credit Card. The guy was typing in my CCV number all the time, when it was actually asking me for a pin code that is only known by me. Finally he let me go behind the counter to have a look and the payment was processed seconds later!
Beware of not having a credit card. Because I potentially had to use cash, they insisted that I pay a deposit of US$500 (I think) which increased my persistence to get the card working! I'm always wary of things like this, as the other side of the border South of Mexico will likely have a very good reason for not refunding this amount back to me. I'm almost certain they will not have the money on hand, or will make me wait etc.
So, with a brief stop over at Pemex for some food, checking tyre pressures and doing a deal on some foreign exchange for Pesos - no banks were open, and Banjercitos at the border didn't want to exchange money either, I was off on the Mex 2 all along the border to Sonoita. The road was pretty bad for a main road. Single line, non divided, badly rutted in places with huge trucks passing by at high speed not interested in staying in their lane.
The drive along the border was quite interesting because they've built about a 4m high, solid steel wall to stop illegal immigrants from crossing with ease through a fence. From Sonoita I drove through to Puerto Penasco which is a town frequented by US tourists.
On the way is when I noticed a strange sound coming from the starter motor the last time I electrically started the bike... that was the beginning of the end for the notoriously flaky, 2nd revision of Valeo starter motors for Airhead boxers.
I decided to push on, hoping that I may be able to fix it in Puerto Penasco with some luck, although I was worried... as I would have to be very very lucky! Arriving in Puerto Penasco was a bit of a let down. Alot of tourists seem to think this place is great, I think it's a dump!
Within about the first 30 mins I was approached in the open by several of the local town pimps for everything ranging from weed, cocaine, women you name it! That trend continued for the next 2 days!
I stayed in a Motel which was the first reasonable one I spotted, and in the end it didn't turn out to be a bad choice, but it only had luke warm water, blisteringly cold at night etc. Not the type of place I envisioned on my way there.
Summary for the day: Late start due to border crossings and various bits of rearrangement of equipment on the bike. Night driving was quite reasonable due to the higher temperatures near the coast but the worry of gettting my starter motor fixed in Mexico was a real concern for the last hour or so of travelling.
