Day 19 - Morellia - Mexico City

I was up early in the morning with everything packed and ready to go. My intentions were to see a little of Morelia, however I wasn't prepared for the early morning traffic, being Friday. So after a couple kilometres heading into town with stop/start trafffic all the way, I decided to get out of there and onto the open road to Mexico City!

The drive from Morelia to Mexico city was interesting. I managed to exploit a bug in my GPS tracker... again... which I normally pickup and have been managing all along, which involves separating the bluetooth GPS and tracking software on my Nokia 73 too far apart... (bluetooth only has an effective range of approximately 10m) and the tracking software doesn't correctly rejoin with the GPS unless you stop the current track and start a new one.

Very irritating, although I usually just ensure that these devices are always together in the top of my backpack so it doesn't happen. Although, I needed to recharge the Mobile and then the GPS on the road becuase my wonderful Motel room in Morelia had no power... so, I am missing my tracking info heading into Mexico city, which is sad becuase I would have liked to have that for future reference.

Anyway, I took the Mex 15 for most of the way, headed west on the Mex 3 when I was nearing Mexico city, South on the Mex 134 and then west directly on the Toluca Mex 15 straight into the ancient metropolis! (I think) There is literally a dozen major ways to take into Mexico city and there is no time for checking maps, deciding on which turnoff to take. I was pretty stressed with the sheer amount of traffic and the speeds at which we were travelling at times through this concrete jungle.

After getting to Santa Fe, which is one of the major new commercial areas in Mexico city, I took time out and pulled into a shopping centre car park to regroup! I called some friends, Oscar and Mayra who gave me their contact details about 2 weeks before while I stopped one evening at a local convenience store on the way to Puerto Penasco. I thought, at best they may be able to guide me through the city at night to a reasonable place to stay. I was open to any options, and anything that would make it easier for me to find my way around.

Unluckilly they were still away travelling, and as such... I left a couple of messages and realised that I'm on my own. My strategy was basically to just relax and go with the flow of traffic until I spotted an area of interest where I could take an exit. I took my earphones out which is definitely a no-no in big cities such as these, you really need to be able to hear that big truck on the side of you speeding up! It's an abosolute overload of the senses in everyway. Ears, Eyes, Balance, real-time decision making, you name it! The only thing you don't need is your sense of smell... which you would probably be better off without!

Coupled with that, I was wondering if the traffic could really be this bad all the time, and then realised that it was 5pm on Friday afternoon! The whole city was on the road! 1 - 2 hours later... it felt like eternity, I was finally near the central part of the city (I thought) which actually turned out to be an area called Condesa, which is a pretty well organised, safe and a tourist friendly area! I had no idea... so beginners luck was on my side. After 5 minutes of riding around Condesa which seemed to be an area that should have Hotels I couldn't find anything at all, but did manage to find an area of cafes and restaurants which was very promising.

I had my first accident about 2 minutes later, and my guardian angel was definitely working overtime by now! A crazy bitch in a speeding black Mercedes Benz decided to overtake me on the right hand side, when I was indicating to turn right! The only warning she gave me was a hoot as she was running by, and I was fully commited and leaned into the turn as well! Suffice to say, I luckilly managed to bounce off the SIDE of her car and my right hand engine protector tore a nice long and expensive dent on the front panel of her car!

I had to pull out all the stops to recover and narrowly escaped a close encounter with the tarmac at 60km/h! I immediately pulled over to the side of the road, which was luckilly not so busy and was bracing myself for the damage. I thought my right pannier would definitely be taken off or something, but to my surprise, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the GS at all!

The bitch obviously started screaming at me in Spanish... which I didn't understand at all! I smiled to her and told her where to go in English! She then switched to English and started telling me how it was my fault becuase I was driving so slow! Luckilly the cafe owner on the corner saw it all, jumped into the fray and started giving it to her in Spanish... and that shut her up pretty quickly.Nice one pal! Thanks!

The air was really charged and the bitch in the Mercedes Benz really felt the eyes of the whole street on her, so she cowered back to hole she came from after that! Still cursing... no doubt, also becuase of the nice big dent in her new Merc! Anyway, I was pretty shaken with a major overdose of adrenalin which was obviously there to help me when I hit the tarmac... but I saved it... it was no longer necessary! I was buzzing!

I sat on the pavement for a while next to the bike and spoke to some of the onlookers about where I'm from and about the bike while settling down. Soon after that, I gathered up the courage to get back on the beast, and now armed with exact information about accomodation in the Condesa area, I was soon pulling into a Hotel carpark!

Day Summary: All good, I took some major excursions around the Lerma area on my way to Mexico city and enjoyed the carniferous forests and mountain roads imensely! The end of the day really worked out alot better than it could have, and as my friend Al would say 'He survives another day'!
