Day 16 - Colima - Taking a break, cleaning up and maintenance

The day started off well with me heading staight to a Honda Shop I spotted in town while driving around looking for a place to stay. I wanted to use their facilities to quickly do an oil change and tune up a couple of things that were bugging me.
I contemplated doing it in the hotel carpark at night, but disposing of the oil would be a problem, and I wasn't going to dump it down a drain or leave it someplace! After alot of talking and me also using my little translation tool to get through the more complex bits, they decided that it would be best to take my bike to the main Honda service center in Town, and even gave me the name of the service manager, Hector.
I hopped on the bike, and after a bit of asking around town (I have no maps for local towns or streets) I found the place, and Hector and I immediately struck up a friendship. I showed him the the bike, and the things I needed done, combined with getting across the message quite clearly that I just wanted to use their workshop, I have my own tools, and I will do the work myself, I was all sorted. Five minutes later, I jumped on the Bony (that's B for Bike instead of Pony... haahaa, just a fun little something me and some friends came up with in SA when I was about 16) and rode her into a service bay in their workshop.
Top of the agenda was increasing the spring tension to it's absolute extreme on the rear... Honda had the right tools for the job and it was a walk in the park, not even taking the shock off the bike at all! Hector was a little hesitant with the amount of pre-load I wanted, but I just kept saying Vamo Mas! Vamo Mas! until we ran out of threads! The next thing was the oil change, and I drained the oil within 5 minutes of getting there, and then, wasn't certain about the type of 'Honda' 10W 40 oil they were offering me. I also checked the transmission level, and the rear drive levels, and both were found wanting.
I know for a fact that I need to be especially carefull with my main transmission level now, as I have a seriously leaky rear drive seal... and running a transmission as hard as I am at the moment will undoubltedly throw a bearing if I am not careful with it's levels. (this was confirmed to me while talking to one of the Swiss Bikers I met, Jurg who is riding an airhead boxer... who was quite concerned to hear I have this problem too, as his tranmission went exactly like that) In my opinion, it's a manageable problem while travelling.
If I was going to be on the road for 4 months, I would fix it straight away as soon as possible. Hell, I'll even take my cyilnders and heads apart and fix my leaky head gaskets and pushrod seals... but, I don't have time for that now. I finally decided that the lower Viscosity 10w40 Honda oil is not what my boxer was looking for. Modern Japanese Honda engines have much lower tolerances, and also don't have the 'oil leaking abosolutely everywhere' problem my GS has.
It shouldn't be like that, but unluckily my little Bony has been owned by some butchers in it's life, and it's a testament to the overall quality of this bike that it's running as well as it does! Combined with that, my motor can at times run EXTREMELY hot due to the fact that it's an air cooled motor with relatively large capacity and me not sparing the horses even for one second, ever!
I have faith in my motor, it may not be perfect, but it's a BMW! Right! Let's just say that my faith is growing in it everyday! I made a quick trip with my new Service Manger friend at Honda to the local Auto Parts store, and found exactly what I was looking for. 20W50 SJ grade motor oil. This oil is better than the oil these motors were designed to run on, and contrary to what alot of motorcyclists who take their bikes to dealers for an oil change think, it's just as good, if not better.
I've even heard of some people that run Diesel oil in their boxers as it's got even more added detergents and magic stuff in there to cope with the higher combustion pressures and compression ratios. Don't be a victim of marketing! Although synthetic oils are even better and allow less frequent changes to stay at the top of it's game, it will simply 'fall out of your boxer'... unless it's aboslutely perfectly put together! (That's what Charlie at Browns motor works said when I asked him about the synthetics they use on the newer bikes... which I thought was a pretty funny way of putting it) 
It was a great day with lots of laughter, fun and games. Productivity levels at Honda were definitely down for the day with me around! To top it all off, Hector offered to pick me up at 10pm at my Hotel for some Tacitos and a night on the town. It never ceases to amaze me how friendly some people can be. Hector flat out refused to take any sort of payment from me! I naturally insisted, and said at least they can buy some Cervezas for the boys or something.
Day Summary: My bike is serviced, the shock is a million times 'harder' than it used to be and should now easily get me to Mexico city without tearing a hole in the Paralever.
