Day 15 - Busceria - Colima
Monday, 07 January 2008
The day started off on the beach, and despite the fact that I didn't want hassles from any locals about being on their beach, I decided to take it easy! My nights rest was actually suprisingly good, and I woke up from a deep slumber just as the sun was coming up and the roosters were crowing!
I actually came about very quickly to check if all my stuff was still around me, as I couldn't remember even waking up once at night to check... I used the rest of my water I had left to make 2 cups of wonderfully good coffee! Why was it so good? Well, becuase it was 6am in the morning, on a beautiful beach and I made the coffee with my stove, my water, and it tasted better than anything in the world. I decided to skip breakfast which would have to be another can of Tuna, and head into town for some decent food!
After a while, a policemen came to check me out, and without even saying anything to me, I just looked as if nothing was out of place at all while sipping my coffee. He shook his head and walked off, definitely thinking that it's not even worth trying to communicate to this clearly from out of town person about the hazards of sleeping on the beach!
After another 30 minutes, just as I was going to leave at around 7am, some local Campasinos (I called them Indians to a girl I met later in Colima, but apparantly they are Campasinos...) came around and offered me a sip of their BEER! At 7AM in the morning! I gave it a skip (to their surprise) had a little more of a chat to them before heading off, with the usual crowd of onlookers staring, whispering, walking by for the 3rd time... you get the picture!
I found this excellent place to have breakfast, relax and get ready for my ride on the Mex 200... which I knew was going to be excellent, but in my wildest dreams... I didn't know how great it was going to be!
After breakfast at the Parrot Bar, about 1km down from where I slept the night before on the beach, I headed to Puerto Vallarta which is a really Tourist oriented coastal resort type of town. Definitely worth a visit for anyone that wants to come to Mexico, but not keen on roughing it with the more down to earth type of resorts not frequented by American tourists. This place has it all!
I took alot of Video on this day, and hopefully if I can get it all uploaded, you will see it for yourself. The quality of the video on YouTube is unluckily pretty poor, but worth looking at if you're interested. EDIT!! aaaaannnnd... I did!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-Eq7qInHyI&rel=1] We're in Puerto Vallarta...and the traffic is a coming!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_KTsLQrkWk&rel=1] Trying to dodge as many lights as possible..only to be caught by the next!
Getting through the busy Puerto Vallarta was quite time consuming and frustrating. Frankly, I'm not interested in the least as I can do the same things, mix with trashy party hard tourists in bars etc. on the Gold Coast, Australia, anytime!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxaTAM6s97M&rel=1] The Beach Front / Promenade. YouTube doesn't do justice to anything!
I finally got through and winding up the mountain escarpment on the Southern end of Puerto Vallarta was still a little bit trafficy, but offered breathtaking views of the ocean, islands and beaches.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEbiH4x9yHU&rel=1] Typical traffic on the Mex200 near larger towns
After approximately 15 km out of town, I had probably one of the most enjoyable rides I've had for a long time! It was probably about 100km of twisting, coastal road with excellent surfacing before it headed slightly inland and became a bit straight and boring for my liking for the next 100+ km, before becoming good again.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_COWXk9HHk8&rel=1] My cheeks are already sore from Grinning so much!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1u2SAzq89w&rel=1] OK, the fun begins! I wet my pants for nearly 100km!
The only down part of this road, is that after about 250km, it runs through every small little town and pueblo along the way. Which is quite interesting at first, but after a while, you really just want to get through and out. There's also no traffic lights to regulate traffic, so you're always dodging cars, kids, goats and hitting about 2 - 4 nasty speed bumps to slow you down through virtually every little Pueblo, of which there must have been about 25 at least through to Manzanillo.
(I was warned about this, and also the fact that there is almost no law enforcement or control on this road for about 300km south on the Mex 200 after Tecoman, and at night, you are almost 100% likely to get held up by drunk local youths in pickup trucks) So, from Manzanillo, I took the Auto Pista South and then inland to Colima. I have to get to Mexico City anyway, so heading to Guadalajara, then onto Mexico City was the fastest easiest way for me to take.
Colima was a great city, which was quite impressive. It had old world charm, organisation to a degree of which I'd seldom witnessed in Mexico thus far and very friendly people! I rocked up at the American Hotel, after some enquiries in town and decided it was the easiest, best option for me. They had parking for the bike, clean rooms and high speed Internet. When I walked into reception, I was well and trully embarrassed as I hadn't showered for 2 days, I hadn't shaven for about 2 weeks and I'd been travelling through sugar cane fires all the way from Manzanillo to Colima.I was looking real rough!
All in all, a great day of approximately 400km from Busceria to Colima via the Mex 200 and then Auto Pista! As good as it gets, because tonight I will have a warm shower, a clean bed and an opportunity to arrange a new rear shock absorber for the bike.
